Body Piercing Aftercare
All body piercings are an injury to the body and so may cause swelling and discomfort, some areas more than others. It is very important to follow the aftercare instructions to give your piercing the best chance of a healthy healing process.
Do not touch your piercing with your dirty fingers.
Do not play, fiddle with or keep touching your new piercing!!!
Always wash hands thoroughly before and after cleaning any piercing area.
Do not turn the jewellery.
This can cause tearing and damage to the surrounding tissue and can lead to infection.
Clean the area 2-3 times a day.
Use an antiseptic wound wash, this is the best and most effective way to clean the piercing.. Spray it onto a tissue (NOT cotton wool) and wipe the area on both entry and exit points. Clean once on a morning and once on an evening, do not over clean as it can irritate the area.
Keep it clean.
Avoid swimming pools, jacuzzis, spas, lakes, rivers and the sea for a minimum of 2 weeks after the procedure.
Preferably take a shower instead of a bath, if you do not have a shower make sure after you bath that you rinse the area thoroughly with clean water and gently pat dry with tissue paper.
Wash your hair frequently and style/tie away from your piercing to prevent dirt/bacteria transferring onto pierced areas. Hair products should be avoided near the pierced area.
For Lip or Tongue piercings, thoroughly rinse your mouth with antiseptic mouthwash approx 2-3 times a day.
It is also advisable to use a new toothbrush as your old one may harbor bacteria.
Tighten the balls frequently to avoid them gradually working loose or falling off.
Avoid makeup near the pierced area.
Wear clean loose fitted garments to allow air circulation and to promote healing, use clean bedding and try to avoid sleeping on the area.
Microdermal piercings, apply pressure using a dressing while the piercing is healing.
Useful Information.
Cartilage Bumps
Cartilage piercings heal more slowly than earlobe piercings and are prone to irritation.
In the first few days after getting your piercing, you may notice a bump or general swelling around the jewelry.
Cartilage piercings typically take anywhere from 4 to 12 months to heal completely.
They heal from the outside in, which means that it may look healed on the outside long before the healing process is actually completed.
Unfortunately, bumps are relatively common with cartilage piercings. They can form soon after your initial piercing or long after it’s truly healed.
Even if your piercing appears healed, you should still clean it every day for at least three to six months. To heal a cartilage bump, bathe in salt water/saline solution.
Other options are to apply a chamomile compress or apply diluted tea tree oil.
Remember, proper hygiene and diligent aftercare are at the heart of a successful piercing experience.
